This visa allows parents to stay in Australia for up to  three or five years, depending on the selected stream. It requires sponsorship from their child, who must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen. The sponsor must meet specific income criteria. This visa does not provide a pathway to permanent residency and cannot be extended beyond the maximum stay period

The contributory Parent Visa offers both temporary and permanent options. The Subclass 173 (Temporary) visa allows parents to stay in Australia for up to two years. Following this period, they can apply for the Subclass 143 (Permanent) visa. These visas are termed “contributory” due to their higher application fees and the requirement for assurance of support. They provide a direct pathway to permanent residency.

The aged Parent Visa offers both temporary and permanent options. The Subclass 884 (Temporary) visa allows parents to stay in Australia, and they can apply for the Subclass 864 (Permanent) visa after residing in Australia on the temporary visa for a specified period. This visa pathway is available to parents who meet the age requirements and have a child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen

The non-contributory Parent Visa is a permanent option with significantly longer processing times compared to the contributory visas. Applicants often encounter extensive waiting periods before these visas are granted.
